We don’t always understand the ingredients in the skin care products that we are using. When we experience dry hands, most of us will each for the closest bottle of lotion. Most commercially produced lotions contain ingredients pretty toxic ingredients. Most lotions contain emollients that are petroleum derived (look for any ingredient that lists petro or mineral oil on your lotion) which are known to cause allergic reactions, redness and an impaired dermal barrier, meaning your skin is more vulnerable to bacteria, pathogens, and viruses. Another culprit are parabens. which are a family of chemicals that are used as preservatives to prevent harmful mold and bacteria growth. Sounds great, right? Parabens have been found to disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen. Oestrogen can trigger breast cell division and lead to the growth of tumors.
So, why are these ingredients used? In a nutshell – cost. These are super cheap ingredients that will make super cheap lotions. When most people are shopping for lotion, $4.99 is a very attractive price for an 8oz bottle, especially in comparison to $20 for a bottle of natural lotion. To achieve a cheap price point, commercial producers need cheap ingredient that still “feel” like they are working. In small amounts these chemicals may be benign, but in higher concentrations they begin to add up. The problem is that these ingredients are found in almost ALL commercial available skin care products which means you are layering the bad stuff on all the time.
Join us in this class where we will teach you about natural lotion ingredients and how to formulate for a great hand lotion that is nourishing and safe for your skin. We will cover 8 different base ingredients, discuss their skin benefits and we will end by blending our own emulsified lotion. You will leave class with a greater understanding of the process as well as your own bottle of hand lotion.
We supply all the ingredients to make a single 4 oz container of lotion. Students will choose their own base ingredients after our lesson on oils and emulsifiers.
